PPSU, Glass or Plastic Feeder: Which One Suits Your Family?

Walk into any baby shop in Pakistan and ask for a feeder, and you will be shown three kinds: honey-coloured PPSU feeders, glass feeders and plain plastic feeders. All three do the same job. The difference is in how heavy they are, what happens when they are dropped, and how they cope with daily washing and sterilising. This guide explains each one so you can pick what suits your home, your routine and your baby.
What PPSU is and why it is used for feeders
PPSU (polyphenylsulfone) is a hard, heat-resistant plastic. You can recognise it by its light honey or amber tint. That colour is the material itself, not a dye or a coating, so do not worry if a PPSU feeder does not look perfectly clear like glass.
Parents choose PPSU for three practical reasons:
- It is light. A PPSU feeder weighs far less than a glass one of the same size, which matters when a baby starts holding the feeder, and when you carry two or three feeders in a bag.
- It does not crack when it is dropped. Feeders get dropped from cots, sofas and car seats. PPSU takes that better than glass.
- It stays clear through repeated sterilising. Cheaper plastics can turn cloudy over time. PPSU is made to handle regular washing and heat. It also contains no BPA.
Our YES Baby PPSU feeders run from 90ml to 350ml, many with side handles, character caps or a straw top.
Glass feeders: weight, breakage and sleeves
Glass is the traditional choice, and many parents and grandparents still prefer it. It is easy to see whether a glass feeder is properly clean, and it does not scratch easily when you scrub it with a brush.
The trade-off is weight and breakage. Glass is heavier, and it can break if it falls on a hard floor. That is why most glass feeders today come with a silicone sleeve or a plastic cover around the bottle. The sleeve gives a better grip and some protection from knocks, and it often carries the character design, such as a teddy bear, a car or a plane.
Our glass feeders start at 60ml and go up to 240ml, in both small/regular neck and wide neck. Small sizes such as 60ml and 120ml are popular as first feeders and as gifts.
Plastic feeders: when they make sense
Plain plastic feeders are the lightest and simplest option. They make sense as a spare feeder, a feeder for outings, or a second feeder kept at the grandparents' house. Our plastic feeders, such as the YES Baby Adorable Bunny and the Football Theme feeders, are wide neck with handles and fun caps.
Plastic is softer than PPSU, so it can scratch with heavy scrubbing and can look worn sooner. Check plastic feeders from time to time, and replace them when the maker's instructions say to, or when they look scratched or cloudy.
Side by side
- Weight: plastic and PPSU are light; glass is the heaviest.
- Drops: PPSU and plastic will not shatter; glass can break, and a sleeve or cover helps.
- Cleaning: all three can be washed with a bottle brush and warm soapy water. Glass shows dirt most clearly; plastic needs the gentlest scrubbing.
- Sterilising: every material has its own limits. Follow the instructions on the box for your feeder.
- Cost: prices differ by material, size and design. Every product page shows the current price.
There is also a fourth option for older babies and travel: stainless steel feeders such as the Meier Baby 2-in-1 and the Fisher-Price 3-in-1, which have double-wall insulation and later change into a water bottle or cup.
How to read the material and size on a feeder box
Before you buy, look at the box or the product page for these details:
- Capacity in ml and oz, for example 240ml (8oz).
- Material of the bottle: PPSU, glass or plastic (PP). The nipple is usually silicone.
- Neck size: small/regular or wide. This decides which spare nipples fit.
- Nipple size or flow, often shown as a letter or a number.
- Age printed by the maker. Follow it.
